Glucose levels rise. The kidneys should begin removing excess glucose when the blood sugars generally rise above 160. As the kidneys do this, you pee a lot. When that happens, you get thirsty and drink a lot of water. High glucose levels cause damage to the small capillaries in the body, and damage to all other tissues, like your nerves. See neuropathy. Excess glucose causes arterial damage. Your body wants to coat the lining of your arteries with bad cholesterol to protest itself. Then because of that, you can get high blood pressure and other coronary problems as well. If levels get above 180 or so, beta cells can die by the thousands. 250 and above, and it's possible you can get DKA or diabetic ketoacidosis, which can also kill you. And if you exercise to get rid of the excess glucose at those levels, you can make Lactic Acidosis, which can also kill you. Either control the diabetes or the disease can maim you and kill you because of the complications.
